Whitecliff Vineyard's Tasting Room

Autumn on the East Coast is spectacular this year. I had really forgotten how beautiful it can be. After living out West for a dozen years where the leaves blew off the trees fairly quickly and ended up landing somewhere in Wyoming, I have been pleasantly reacquainted with the smell of leaves, distant wood fires and something apple-like in the air. The trees are glowing, and the sunlight is golden in the mornings and late afternoons. Just perfectly exhilirating.

Yesterday, we spent the day driving around in Ulster County and Orange County in New York's Hudson Valley visiting a few wineries. Our journey began at Whitecliff Vineyard in Gardiner, NY, where we tasted (and bought) some excellent reds as well as a good Seyval Blanc, which admittedly has taken me some time and perseverence to learn to like. Our next stop took us to Robibero Family Vineyards of New Paltz. Robibero is the newest winery in the Hudson Valley, yet they have many years of wne-making experience. Their wines are very California-style in their construction, and their tasting room is really pleasant.

Yesterday I wrote about three simple things to do to improve your photography. Today, I'm trying to put this into practice. When I got up this morning, the sun was just coming up across the Hudson River, and I hurried outside in my pj's to set up the tripod. It's so peaceful on the water early in the day, and I wanted to capture a moment of quiet before a more typical kind of Monday began.

The last time I was in Italy, I saw an exhibition of work by 19th Century artist, Canaletto, and this image reminds me a bit of his spacious work. I'm lucky to have seen this sky today.

Climbing out of an artistic rut has been incredibly challenging. I attended a seminar today led by photographer Scott Bourne, and he gave some great advice for improving one's photography.

First, take a photograph every day. Knowing where every dial and button on the camera is located and knowing what every setting can do is the backbone of successful photography.

Second, read a different page of your camera's manual every day. After reading it, do that thing with the camera (see the first item).

Third, look at 100 photographs every day. All great writers are also great readers; this is how photographers should emulate that practice. So, here's what I found today from an excellent photographer, Peggy Sayben.

Today's post doesn't need too many words. Here are some photos of an artist on the rise -- Sergio Ortega's first show at the Rockwood Music Hall -- and I got to be there to take photos of him.

The Rockwood is a great venue -- intimate and very, very musical. The beers aren't too expensive, and there's no cover (at least any of the times I've been there). So, tip your bartenders well and have a great night.

My little tomato flowers are getting bigger and brighter. I'm planning all the ways I'm going to use the tomatoes from my two San Marzano plants! Maybe I'll get at least a batch of tomato sauce from them. I wish I had paid more attention when my Mom and Dad had their huge vegetable gardens in our backyard when I was growing up and learned some basic gardening skills.

My lavender plants are growing, too. My little balcony garden is very happy this afternoon. Happy Father's Day to all dads! I lucked out and got the best dad of all!

Tomatoes in New Jersey

Obviously, it's been ages since I posted anything on this blog, since the last entry concerns snow. It's been a very warm spring, and I've enjoyed every second of it, even as the humidity creeps up. I'm armed with hair products to prevent too much frizz, and I go into mirror denial anyway in the summer.

I'm excited to announce my tomato plants -- all two of them -- growing on my balcony seem to be making tiny, tiny flowers. With luck and lots of water and some attention from the bees, I might have some tomatoes of my own to harvest later this season! San Marzano, organic, and growing side by side with a cute little basil plant. If I could plant some bufalo mozzarella, I'd be in heaven! Here are some pics of my little weensy tomato flowers, shot with my 60 mm macro lens just after I watered the plants today.

If you have any, I could use some how-to-grow-great-tomato tips.

Here I am, living in New Jersey again. The snow followed me here, and some people aren't really happy about that -- you know, the people who panic at a foul weather forecast and stampede the supermarket for bread and milk, even if they don't normally consume those foods...

Anyway, I'm temporarily living in Paramus/Fairlawn and will be moving next week to a new place in Edgewater, right along the Hudson River.

I'm so excited to be back in the Garden State. New home, new job, more adventures.

Stay with me, and I'll start posting some great home finds. It's exciting to do some home changes! In the meantime, here's a view of that snow, Jersey style.

I'm fortunate to live next to dedicated open space. We regularly see deer, elk, fox, pheasant, red-tail hawk, winter-white rabbit and moose. On a snowy Sunday recently, a mother and her daughter spent a good part of the day cavorting in our yard. I stood outside just 20 feet away from them and quietly took these images:

Moose are supposedly one of North America's most dangerous animals to humans, even more so than bears or wildcats. Getting between a mother and her calf can be a terrible thing, but on this day, Mom was not the least bit interested in me. Her daughter, however, seemed happy to pose.

When I photograph families, sometimes it takes a little time for everyone to warm up. Not everyone is always comfortable facing a camera. I try to make people forget I'm there, in a way, while at the same time let my families get to know me a little bit. It's important for everyone to be comfortable and loose.

Harvest, Hazy Autumn, and Desires

This summer was supposed to be relaxing. It wasn't. Things just kept heating up and life got really busy. I admit, I love being busy and I freak out a little when things slow down. Now, it's fall. The air is hazy and changes throughout the day -- crispy in the morning and gradually heating up to a toasty haze in the late afternoon. The crickets are singing a sustained, one-note song. I'm just relishing the last precious days of full-on color.

A Night Under the Stars

Jackson Browne

Last night was a magical night. First, I got to help a good friend celebrate her birthday, and secondly, I got to treat my husband to an early birthday gift of his own -- a night hearing one of our favorite singer/songwriters, Jackson Browne. We took blankets, wine, cupcakes, cheeses, olives, bread and sat with about 2,200 others in Park City's Deer Valley Resort Ampitheater. Jackson ambled onstage and said a quiet hello without any fanfare and proceeded to play for the next two and a half hours without a break.

It occurred to me that concerts from my younger days would have been even more fun if we'd had the wherewithal to take a picnic and nice wines instead of warm beers and, well, not much else. Olives? Hardly.

Watermelon Lemonade on the deck works for me!

Meyer lemons, juiced and muddled with sugar and fresh mint

Watermelon Lemonade on the Deck!

Just the thing for a hot afternoon -- the right amount of sweetness, a bit of tart, and even the rich anti-oxidants found in watermelon. I found this recipe on Martha Stewart's blog and had to give it a try. Here's the recipe, tweaked a bit to add a bit more nutrition:

1-1/2 mini seedless watermelons
2 Meyer lemons
large handful of fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup packed brown sugar

Watermelon ready to blend 'til smooth

Slice open the watermelon and cut the flesh into chunks. Blend in a high-speed blender (like a Vita-Mix) in batches until it's blended smoothly. Quarter the lemons and squeeze the juice into a large pitcher. Throw the lemon rinds into the pitcher, add the mint leaves and the sugar and muddle them until the sugar dissolves into the lemon juice and the mint leaves are bruised. Stir in the blended watermelon. Serve over crushed ice.

Optional: Add 1.5 ounces of premium vodka to the glass with your crushed ice before pouring in the lemonade. Stir well.

Spring flowers I photographed this morning as the clouds cleared from an overnight rain shower. I'll be posting these images for sale in my Etsy shop as a set of 5x5-inch prints. You might walk past these flowers without much notice. They are tiny. I had to hurry before the breeze that was working to push away the clouds started to disturb the little flowers. If only my camera could capture smell! The scent of the green, the blooming buds, the recent rain.....there are no words to describe the deliciousness.

April has turned out to be a busy month for me. It's been so long between postings I'm incredibly embarrassed. I've been photographing all kinds of things -- sandals, candles, brides, adorable engaged couples, and greeting cards -- and I've been doing a lot of writing, too.

To take a break from editing an article I'm working on, I went diving through one of my picture folders and decided to work with an image I took in Vancouver, BC, right around Chinese New Year. It's going to be listed in my Etsy shop a bit later today.

Bicycles make me happy. I like bikes with fenders, reflectors, bookracks, and a little bit of rust for character. I remember all the bikes I've had in my life from the time I was six years old. The happiest thing about bikes is that you really never forget how to ride them.

Sunday mornings are the time to be lazy, and if you want to stay in your pj's all day, why not cook something healthy and tasty for yourself? So, grab the Sunday New York Times and your frying pan and get started. Today's Tweak Cooking is for a:

Spinach, Mushroom, Tomato & Goat Cheese Fritatta

2 tbsp. unsalted butter OR 2 tbsp. olive oil (your choice)

1 small shallot, finely diced

8 oz. mushrooms (crimini, shitake, white button, what you like), sliced

2 oz. grape tomatoes, sliced in half lengthwise

5 oz. baby spinach, rinsed well and spun dry

7 large eggs, whisked with a tbsp. of water

4 oz. fresh goat cheese, sliced into rounds

fresh basil leaves, chopped coarsely, or 1/4 tsp. dried basil

salt & pepper to taste

sliced grape tomatoes and crimini mushrooms

finely diced shallots

Start by pre-heating your oven to 400 degrees F.

In a 10-inch skillet, heat the butter or oil over medium-high heat. Stir in the shallots and cook while stirring until they are soft, not browned. Add the sliced mushrooms and saute until they are soft and the moisture is released. Add the tomatoes and cook for a minute. Stir in the spinach all at once, and stir often, as the spinach cooks down to a manageable level. Season with salt & pepper. Now, check the heat on the stove and pour in the whisked eggs. Put the rounds of goat cheese on top of everything.You can use a spatula and loosen the edges of the frittata and allow the uncooked eggs on top to flow to the edge of the pan. Let the frittata cook on the stove top for a few minutes until the bottom sets. Then set the pan in the pre-heated oven and let it cook for 10-15 minutes until the top of the frittata is set. Take out of the oven and cut into wedges and serve.

Millcreek Canyon

The population of my town is divided at this time of year, and although I've got no scientific idea of the numbers or percentages of the feelings, I do know there are two viewpoints. Some of us are completely finished with winter and are anxiously waiting for warm weather, and there are others amongst us who would be in heaven if it would be winter all year round. I'm not telling which group I belong to (at least for today). Here's another image I took in Millcreek Canyon just east of Salt Lake City. I'm thinking of adding it to my images for sale. What do you think?

I'm taking a great photography class with the University of Utah. Last weekend, we hiked into Millcreek Canyon just east of Salt Lake City, and that's where this image was taken. It's snowing today, and tomorrow we are meeting at the Silver Lake area of Big Cottonwood Canyon, just near Brighton Ski Area. Although I've done a lot of grousing about the winter, today I am happy we are getting more snow. I'm having fun working on the challenge of photographing white snow.

I admit I don't relish going to the grocery store, and I pride myself in stretching out the need to make a trip to the supermarket. And lately, I've been playing a game with myself called Use It Up. I want to make use of everything in my pantry and fridge and waste nothing.

I'm experimenting with using grains and vegetables to make tasty combinations that work as accompaniments to proteins at dinner, as stand-alones for a great lunch, or even a hearty and savory way to start the day as a breakfast.

Today, I made Couscous with Chickpeas and Carrots. True, couscous is not actually a grain; it's a tiny pasta. I love it because it's so quick to cook and can be combined with just about anything. It's easy to carry to work to either heat up or eat cold for lunch, and I think kids like it.

Tweaked Couscous With Chickpeas & Carrots

1-1/2 cups organic chicken broth (to make this recipe vegan, use water or vegetable stock)

1 tsp. olive oil

1 peeled & sliced carrot

1 15-oz. can of chick peas (ceci), drained and rinsed

1/2 tsp. sea salt or kosher salt

1/4 tsp. ground pepper

1/2 cup couscous

1/4 cup chopped raw almonds, toasted

1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, or more, for serving

Makes about 4 servings.

Bring the broth and olive oil to boil in a medium-size saucepan. Add the carrot slices and chickpeas and simmer for a couple of minutes, just to make the carrots crisp-tender. Stir in the salt and pepper. Remove from the heat and stir in the couscous. Cover the pan and let it sit for 5 minutes, while the couscous absorbs all the liquid. Using a fork, toss the couscous mixture to fluff it up. Stir in the almonds and parsley. Add a bit more salt, if you need to, and be generous with the pepper.

fit for breakfast, a quick lunch or part of a great dinner

You can use sliced celery, leftover peas, or any vegetable you might have on hand. If you are using broccoli, toss it in at the end after the couscous is cooked.

This coming spring we will probably make some hard and fast decisions on only one or two new things to get to celebrate the season. I was poking around today and found some great things to think about. I admit, these shoes are more than a splurge. They are so expensive, they should be illegal. But if you can find a knock-off of these somewhere, go for it. These spring boots have a perforated leather calf and are really meant for walking. And the sandal/bootie is just the perfect shape for a skirt or dress and a beautiful pair of tights that can take you from now into the warmer days. These are by Loeffler Randall, and if my lottery ticket is actually a winner, these are what I'll splurge on!

This facial cleanser by Fresh is wonderful. It's silky and non-sudsing. I put this in today's spring mix because it has a light scent of cucumber, and that always makes me feel like the weather is getting warmer. This soy cleanser even takes off eye makeup gently and leaves your skin feeling clean and soft. An added bonus is that one tube really lasts a long time.

I just learned that Michelle Obama is March's cover model for Vogue Magazine. This is so exciting. In my lifetime, she is the only First Lady I've found to be a complete example of American womanhood and someone to admire and emulate. Doesn't she look fantastic?

Lion's Gate Bridge, Vancouver

Vancouver, BC, is a beautiful city. It's a fascinating mix of Native North American/Pacific Northwest, Europe, China and even a little Japan. You see it in the architecture, the artwork, the people, and the amazing scenery. The sky plays a big part in Vancouver life -- the beautiful cloud formations on the mountains overlooking the water, the way it dips down to say hello to the tall buildings, the rain it sends down to the streets.

Nikolai's hand-built bread oven. It took him about a year to complete it.

You can try a sample of bread. But remember to say, "please."

Polished wood floors; appropriately-flour-dusted workspaces.

Take a look at the finished product. It's still warm after being out of the oven for an hour.

Pride in workmanship.

It was the warm aroma of freshly-baked bread that drew us into the door of the Romanian Country Bread Bakery in Steveston, BC, Canada. Inside, Nikolai Constantin seemed to be waiting for us as we walked inside his shop. We needed something to accompany our smoked tuna, and here it was. Although we were a bit shocked at the price -- $10C per loaf -- we paid it and were glad we did. The crust was the perfect combination of crusty and chewy, and the bread inside was just soft enough, yet it had just the right texture to stand on its own. Nikolai might be the world's most perfectionist baker, and he takes immense pride in putting out a superior loaf. It took him nearly a year to complete the brick oven in the shop, and he did it himself. His loaves take around 24 hours from start to finish, and the proof is in the finished product. We are quite certain this loaf of bread could truly sustain someone as a perfect food.

All Nikolai needs now is some jars of jam and a coffee pot to make his shop complete!

P.S. He's got a sign that says "No Photography", but he waives this rule if you buy a loaf from him.

The First Mate and Skipper

The Pathfinder II, Steveston, BC, Canada

The sun shone in Vancouver yesterday, and we headed over to Steveston for a walk along the fishing pier and through the little village. Our camera found a fisherman and his boat tied up to the dock. While we negotiated on the price of a piece of smoked tuna, he and his dog posed for a few snaps. This gentleman came to Canada from Poland 40 years ago. He is a commercial fisherman and sells his catch to local fish stores. His dog, Skipper, is just that -- the boat's skipper -- while our fisherman refers to himself as the first mate.

Tomorrow: we buy some handmade bread from an artisinal baker in Steveston to go with the smoked tuna.

G'day Park City! It's a lovely Sunday in the Park........

The winter weather has taken a turn for the spring-like these past few days in Park City. Even the Sundance Film Festival crowds did not bring snow with them, as they usually do. The sun is blazing, the sky is brilliant blue. It's just gorgeous outside. It's time to lighten up for a few days and brighten your spirits.

Deep in the heart of winter, it's time to start thinking about getting involved with your local CSA. What's that, you ask? CSA is Community Supported Agriculture, and this is how you find the vegetables and fruits that are grown in your area. It's a healthy way to eat and it's a mindful way to live. It's a smart thing to buy your food from local sources -- it saves on energy when your food doesn't have to travel from other countries to reach you AND it's better for your health to eat locally-grown food.

Many local produce farms offer CSA shares. You can purchase a portion of the harvest from a particular farm, and that means you can get vegetables and fruits that are ripe and in-season and at their peak of flavor. The farmers either deliver to you, or they have set pickup dates and places for you to pick up your share. You can purchase as much as you need whether you are a large family or just cooking for you. You can also divide the shares with your neighbors. It's such a great community activity. Support your local farmer and live closer to the earth. Now is a good time to research participating farms, because some farms sell out their shares early in the growing season.

I purchased this knitted cowl pattern just yesterday. The directions are clear and concise, it uses just one skein of yarn and is knit on circular needles in the simple seed stitch. Jane, the pattern designer, is a lovely person.

Okay, if this doesn't look like fun, I just don't know what. You don't have to be a child to think of all the possibilities for fun inside this castle that fits over a table......... Let your imagination run rampant.
